Handgun Retention

This course is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively respond to high-risk situations, particularly when confronted by a violent offender in close-quarters encounters. Through a combination of realistic scenarios and specialized training techniques, students will learn how to prevent an assailant from gaining control of their firearm, ensuring they are better prepared to handle situations that may escalate into physical confrontations.

Prerequisite

Completion of Basic Pistol 101 or Defensive Pistol 100. A pre-approved course/recommendation from a reputable instructor may also be considered.

Topics Covered

In addition to practical defensive tactics, this class will cover essential concepts such as de-escalation strategies, applying force in various circumstances, and methods for maintaining personal safety while minimizing harm. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the legal and ethical considerations of using force, as well as developing situational awareness and decision-making skills that can help students navigate stressful encounters with confidence and control. By the end of the course, participants will have a comprehensive understanding of how to protect themselves and others while managing potentially violent confrontations.

Required Equipment

  • This is a hands-on course; we recommend athletic or loose attire with a sturdy belt.  Closed-toe shoes are required.
  • As with any course of this type, no weapons will be allowed on students during instruction or practice: please leave them in your vehicle or at home.
