Why Is a Renewal Class Now Required?
Colorado House Bill 24-1174 changed the CHP renewal process starting July 1, 2025. Under the old law, you could renew by submitting paperwork alone — no additional training was needed. Under the new law, every renewal applicant must complete a refresher class taught by a Colorado-verified firearms instructor.
The refresher class must be:
- At least 2 hours long
- Taught by a county-verified instructor (Makhaira’s instructors are verified by Larimer County Sheriff’s Office)
- Completed within 6 months of submitting your renewal application to your county sheriff
- Inclusive of a live-fire exercise — minimum 50 rounds, 70% accuracy required
- Inclusive of a written exam — minimum 80% score required
Your county sheriff will not process your renewal application without proof of a training certificate from a verified instructor. Makhaira Group’s renewal class meets all requirements under C.R.S. § 18-12-202.5(4) and HB24-1174, and your certificate is valid in all 64 Colorado counties.
What to Expect in the CHP Renewal Refresher Class
Makhaira Group’s CHP Renewal class is a 2.5-hour course designed specifically for existing Colorado permit holders. You already know the fundamentals — this class keeps you current on legal changes and sharpens your shooting proficiency.

- Required accuracy: 70% on target to pass
- Certified range safety and marksmanship coaching from certified Colorado firearms instructors
Upon successful completion: you receive your original signed training certificate, valid for 6 months from the class date.
How to Renew Your Colorado CHP — Step by Step
Once you’ve completed your Makhaira renewal class, the rest of the process is straightforward:
- Complete the Makhaira Group CHP Renewal class and receive your original signed training certificate.
- Download and complete your county sheriff’s renewal application form (available at your county sheriff website).
- Gather your required documents. Requirements vary by county — visit your county sheriff’s website for the complete list. Typically this includes your completed renewal application, a valid Colorado Driver’s License, your original training certificate, and payment for the renewal fee.
- Submit your application to your county sheriff in person or by mail. You may submit up to 120 days before your permit expires.
- Your renewed permit will be mailed to your address within approximately 4–90 days, depending on your county’s processing time.
IMPORTANT: Your Makhaira training certificate is valid for 6 months from your class date. Do not complete the class more than 6 months before submitting your renewal application.

Do I have to take a class to renew my Colorado CHP?

Can I carry while my renewal is being processed?
Yes — as long as your permit is not yet expired when you submit your renewal application, you may continue to carry concealed during the processing period.

What do I need to bring to the renewal class?
Bring your firearm (pistol or revolver, any caliber), at least 50 rounds of ammunition, eye and ear protection, a valid photo ID, and payment for the class fee. Rental firearms are available if needed — contact us in advance.
