Why Is a Renewal Class Now Required?

Colorado House Bill 24-1174 changed the CHP renewal process starting July 1, 2025. Under the old law, you could renew by submitting paperwork alone — no additional training was needed. Under the new law, every renewal applicant must complete a refresher class taught by a Colorado-verified firearms instructor.

The refresher class must be:

  • At least 2 hours long
  • Taught by a county-verified instructor (Makhaira’s instructors are verified by Larimer County Sheriff’s Office)
  • Completed within 6 months of submitting your renewal application to your county sheriff
  • Inclusive of a live-fire exercise — minimum 50 rounds, 70% accuracy required
  • Inclusive of a written exam — minimum 80% score required

Your county sheriff will not process your renewal application without proof of a training certificate from a verified instructor. Makhaira Group’s renewal class meets all requirements under C.R.S. § 18-12-202.5(4) and HB24-1174, and your certificate is valid in all 64 Colorado counties.

What Renewal Students Are Saying

Frequently Asked Questions — CHP Renewal Colorado

Do I have to take a class to renew my Colorado CHP?

Yes. Since July 1, 2025 (HB24-1174), all CHP renewal applicants generally must complete a 2-hour in-person refresher class taught by a verified instructor. The class must include a live-fire exercise and written exam. You cannot renew by submitting paperwork alone.

How long is the CHP renewal class?

Colorado law requires a minimum of 2 hours of instruction. Makhaira Group’s renewal class runs 2.5 hours to ensure students have adequate range time and thorough legal review.

How soon before my permit expires should I take the renewal class?

Your training certificate is valid for 6 months from the class date, and renewal applications can be submitted up to 120 days before your permit expires. We recommend taking the class within 90–100 days of your permit’s expiration date so your certificate is still valid when the sheriff processes your application.

Is Makhaira Group’s renewal class accepted by all Colorado counties?

Yes. Our instructors are verified by the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office. Under Colorado law, a verified instructor’s certificate is valid statewide — accepted by all 64 county sheriffs.

What happens if my CHP has already expired?

You have a 6-month grace period after expiration to renew. If your permit has been expired for more than 6 months, you must start the new applicant process (8-hour class, $152.50 fee). Contact Makhaira Group if you’re unsure which class applies to you.

Can I carry while my renewal is being processed?

Yes — as long as your permit is not yet expired when you submit your renewal application, you may continue to carry concealed during the processing period.

Where does the CHP renewal class take place?

Classes are held at two Northern Colorado locations: Liberty Firearms Institute (4990 Ronald Reagan Blvd, Johnstown, CO 80534) and Great Guns Sporting LLC (16126 Co Rd 96, Nunn, CO 80648). Check the booking calendar for current locations and dates.

What do I need to bring to the renewal class?

Bring your firearm (pistol or revolver, any caliber), at least 50 rounds of ammunition, eye and ear protection, a valid photo ID, and payment for the class fee. Rental firearms are available if needed — contact us in advance.
