Specified Semiautomatic Firearms (SSF) CoursesColorado Senate Bill 25-003 Training

Starting August 1, 2026, Colorado requires eligible purchasers of certain semiautomatic firearms to complete state-certified training before they can buy. Makhaira Group is offering both certified SSF courses at Liberty Firearms Institute in Johnstown — serving Fort Collins, Greeley, Loveland, Longmont, Denver, and Northern Colorado.

Class dates are being finalized. Registration opens no later than July 15, 2026.

Which SSF Course Do You Need?

Colorado Senate Bill 25-003 establishes two training pathways based on whether you have completed a Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) Hunter Education course.

4-Hour SSF Course

For: Individuals who have completed a CPW-approved Hunter Education course
Length: 4 hours
Timing: Must be completed within 5 years of your qualifying firearm purchase
Prerequisite: Valid CPW Hunter Education certificate

12-Hr Extended SSF Course

For: Individuals who have NOT completed Hunter
Education
Length: 12+ hours, delivered over a minimum of 2 days
Timing: Complete before purchasing a covered semiautomatic firearm
Prerequisite: None

Important: As of now, there are no exceptions. If you do not have your Hunter’s Safety card, you must take the 12-hour course.

What Is Senate Bill 25-003?

Senate Bill 25-003 creates new training and eligibility requirements for individuals seeking to purchase certain semiautomatic firearms in Colorado. Beginning August 1, 2026, eligible purchasers must:

Complete a state-certified SSF training course approved by Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW)
Meet additional application requirements through their local Sheriff’s Office
