NRA Basic Pistol
The NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting is intended for all individuals regardless of previous shooting experience or NRA-affiliation and is available for delivery in two ways. One option is the traditional, instructor-led course where you will receive direct instruction from an NRA-certified instructor from beginning to end. The other option has two components: a self-study or “eLearning module” which is completed online in your own timeframe and a hands-on practical portion conducted in a classroom and shooting range with an Instructor.

Course Information
The NRA Basics of Shooting courses are a great way for you to learn the basics of pistol/rifle shooting. These courses combine classroom and range time learning to pistols and/or rifles. Students learn NRA’s rules for safe gun handling, pistol parts and operation, ammunition, shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting positions, cleaning the pistol, and continued opportunities for skill development.
Completion of a NRA Basics of Shooting course in a specific discipline is required for anyone looking to obtain their NRA Instructor Certifications. For Example, if you are interested in becoming a NRA certified Pistol Instructor you will need to complete the NRA Basic Pistol course, NRA Basic Instructor Training (BIT) course, and the NRA Pistol Instructor Certification course.

The NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting is intended for all individuals regardless of previous shooting experience or NRA-affiliation and is available for delivery in two ways. One option is the traditional, instructor-led course where you will receive direct instruction from an NRA-certified instructor from beginning to end. The other option has two components: a self-study or “eLearning module” which is completed online in your own timeframe and a hands-on practical portion conducted in a classroom and shooting range with an Instructor.
Course topics include:
- gun safety rules,
- proper operation of revolvers and semi-automatic pistols,
- ammunition knowledge and selection,
- pistol selection and storage,
- shooting fundamentals,
- pistol inspection and maintenance,
- marksmanship,
- shooting range safety.
Additionally, students will complete live fire training and a nationally standardized shooting qualification while on the range with an NRA Certified Instructor.
Required Equipment
- Quality, working, serviceable pistol. Please bring your pistol to the course unloaded and in a case. If you do not own your own pistol, rentals are available for an additional fee.
- 50 rounds of ammunition (Factory produced ammo only. No home reloads allowed due to insurance.)
- 2 magazines (minimum)
- Eye and ear protection – If you do not have your own, loaner eye and ear protection will be available.
- Baseball style hat to keep brass from getting behind your eye protection.
- Personal food (optional). Bottled water will be provided and you are welcome to eat during the classroom portion if you choose. In addition to periodic short breaks, there will be a formal one hour break.
- Appropriate clothing (i.e. closed-toe shoes, pants, long sleeve shirt without low neckline).
